Fantastic Four: First Steps
A Retro-Futuristic Launchpad for Marvel’s Next Phase
The Fantastic Four is finally getting its MCU debut, and Marvel isn’t only introducing a movie, they’re building a cultural moment.
With a 1960s-inspired marketing campaign dripping in Space Race nostalgia. This is looking like it will be Marvel’s boldest franchise reboot yet!
But here’s the real question: Can they pull it off?
The Trailer Release – Nostalgia Meets Innovation
Marvel’s marketing team has gone all-in on retro-futurism for 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps'. From initial posters that mimic the feel of 1960s propaganda. To a trailer launch party at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama (complete with Saturn V rocket backdrops). The start to their campaign is looking promising!
Key Campaign Highlights:
Posters: Released following the trailer. These posters set the tone with their vintage aesthetic, with subtle nods to the optimism of mid-century America. But, all is not always Fantastic. As fans were quick to point out inconsistencies on social media. Marvel denied use of AI to make the teaser posters - check them out below:

Trailer Launch Event: The trailer debuted at a live event at Huntsville’s Space Center. Blending real-world space exploration history with the cosmic ambitions of the Fantastic 4. The cast also appeared in person, and looked like a lot of fun. I also love how they filmed the event with a grainy look to further immerse us!

I love how Ebon even got the fans involved in saying 'it's clobbering time' (Immersion)
Social Media Dominance: Within 24 hours of its release. The teaser trailer gained over 200 million views across all platforms. A record-breaking feat second only to Deadpool & Wolverine. As of writing this, it has 28M views on YouTube and 861k likes!
Why It Works:
Emotional Resonance: The retro visuals tap into nostalgia. Whilst introducing younger audiences to the Fantastic Four’s roots. Honestly, Marvel pretty much always gets me pumped up!
Cultural Relevance: By tying the film into the Space Race aesthetic. Marvel positions 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' as both timeless and forward-looking.
Fan Engagement: The addition of interactive fan events. Immerses and asks fans to take part in the universe-building process.
Transmedia Storytelling – Adding To The Universe
Marvel isn’t in the business of making movies; they craft intricate ecosystems. With 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps''. Marvel are doubling down on transmedia storytelling to expand their brand universe.
Examples of Transmedia Strategy:
Gaming Tie-Ins: Other than the most recent addition of the Fantastic Four into Marvel Rivals. Rumours suggest Fantastic Four Fortnite skins are on the way. Following the many successful collaborations Marvel & Fortnite have already produced. With a bunch of examples - from Spider-Man to the Avengers - it can almost be expected.
Merchandising Push: Expect action figures, LEGO sets, and retro-inspired collectibles to dominate store shelves by Q3 2025.
Why This Matters for Marvel’s Future:
The Fantastic Four isn’t another superhero team. They are Marvel’s “First Family.” By treating them as their own franchise within the MCU (à la Guardians of the Galaxy). Marvel is laying the groundwork for cross-platform storytelling. And in Marvel fashion this film will likely tie into the upcoming tentpole titles Avengers: Doomsday & Avengers: Secret Wars!
Media Planning Insights – How Marvel Maximizes Impact
As someone who geeks out over media planning (yes, that’s me), I can’t help but admire how Marvel orchestrates campaigns like this one. Let’s break it down:
Media Channels in Play:
Out-of-Home (OOH): Expect massive activations closer to release. Think Times Square takeovers or AR-enhanced billboards showcasing Reed Richards’ stretching powers or Galactus looming over cityscapes.
Connected TV (CTV): Teaser ads will dominate platforms like Hulu and Disney+, targeting both casual viewers and hardcore fans already embedded in Marvel content ecosystems.
Digital Domination: TikTok trends, Instagram AR filters, and bespoke content with cast members will drive organic engagement. As well as a bunch of paid digital advertising.
The Barbie Comparison:
Marvel will most likely borrow from Barbie’s $150M marketing playbook: leveraging partnerships, interactive experiences, and nostalgia-driven visuals to create cultural dominance.
Implications for the MCU – A Turning Point?
The stakes are high for 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps'. After a rocky Phase 4 filled with mixed reviews (Marvels, anyone?). This film needs to deliver on multiple fronts:
Rebuilding Trust: Fans are looking for consistency after Phase 4’s uneven storytelling. The retrofuturistic tone could ground this film while leaving room for cosmic expansion. Think Secret Wars & Doctor Doom.
Introducing Mutants: With Galactus as an overarching threat and hints of Doom lurking in the shadows. This film could pave the way for the X-Men while tying into larger MCU narratives.
Personal Take – Why This Excites Me as a Fan AND Strategist
Look, we've all been burned by bad Fantastic Four adaptations before (cough 2015). But this project and campaign feels different. It’s cohesive, ambitious, and deeply rooted in storytelling fundamentals. From Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards (amazing casting) to Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing (chef’s kiss), everything about this project screams potential.
As someone who loves analysing transmedia ecosystems AND geeking out over superhero lore. I can’t wait to see how Marvel ties this into their broader strategy.
Closing Thoughts: What We Can Learn from Fantastic Four
Whether you’re a fan or a marketer (or both), there are lessons to be learned here:
Nostalgia sells - but only when paired with innovation.
Transmedia storytelling isn’t optional anymore - it’s essential for building lasting franchises.
Media planning is about more than budgets - it’s about creating cultural moments that resonate across generations.
So here we are; July 2025 feels far away, but if Marvel keeps playing chess while everyone else plays checkers? This might be their next big win.
What do you think? Are you hyped for Fantastic Four, or are you cautiously optimistic like me? Let me know in the comments - I’d love to hear your thoughts!
